1. The town of Denning, which encompasses the hamlets of Clareville and Sundown, is located in the Catskill Park. Fish abound in the many streams in the area, and there is even a registered National Historic Site locate there, the Red Hill Fire Tower.

2. The town of Esopus is almost surrounded by waterways, with the Hudson River on the east, the Rondout Creek north and west, and the Wallkill River also on the western boundary. Esopus began as a group of many small hamlets, each devoted to a particular industry. It also is host to a fertile lands enhanced by the deposits for the waterways around it. Esopus is internationally known for the Esopus Spritzenburgh apple, which was discovered there in the 18th century and is reputed to have been Thomas Jefferson’s favorite apple. With one foot rooted in history, Esopus has the other foot lodged in the future with its Town Hall’s new geothermal heating and cooling system.

3. The town of Gardiner, dating back to 1853, is fertile farming land, aided by the Shawangunk Kill and Wallkill Rivers.

4. In the western part of Ulster County, the town of Hardenburgh has view of five of the Catskill High Peaks. If remote is what is wanted in residential housing, this is the town in which to reside. There is no center of town, only farms and homes, with the only direct route from Hardenburgh to the rest of Ulster County being hiking trails. Needless to say, hiking and fishing are very popular here.

5. The second oldest settlement in Ulster County, the town of Hurley began its existence in 1662 as Nieu Dorp. It is known for the fact that it has twenty-five National Register of Historic Places stone homes from the 18th and 19th centuries.

6. The town of Kingston dates back to 1688, and is predominantly rural in nature.

7. The town of Marbletown cozies up to the Catskill Mountains between the Shawangunk Mountains and the Ashokan Reservoir offering exquisite scenery. Established in 1703 after cement was discovered in High Falls, one of its villages, it is predominantly a historic district. It has over a hundred 18th century houses made of stone.

8. The town and village of New Paltz is the site of the State University of New York.
